60s Fancy Dress Costumes – 5 Accessories to Help Make Your Sixties Outfits Look Totally Groovy
Today, there are some great 60’s costumes that are perfect for any retro costume party or even as disco wear. Even if your basic 60’s costume should look great on its own, if you really want to create a costume that looks authentic, you will need to buy some accessories. Here are my top tips on accessories that will help you turn your basic 60’s costume into something really believable and, most importantly, totally cool.
Accessory Tip 1: Buy a 60s wig
Besides choosing the right shoes, I consider the right headdress to be the most important complement to your costume. A 60’s wig really gives your costume that certain something, you just have to decide which wig you want to wear. There are a large number of 1960s wigs to choose from, including 1960s style wigs, Cilla wigs, game wigs, and, for the truly adventurous among you, beehive wigs. Whatever type of wig you choose, make sure it is a wig that fits.
Accessory Tip 2: Get a Sixties Hat
If you don’t feel like wearing a wig, it’s best to get a sixties hat. PVC disco hats in the color of your clothes are always a good idea, or maybe a carnival hat if you choose the mod sixties to look. You could also consider a hat and wig combination, which is a cheaper alternative than paying for the hat and wig separately.
Accessory Tip 3: Cover
The minidress plays a big role in the 1960s fashion, and some of you might think that the 1960s suits are a little too revealing. If you’re one of those who would be happier if they showed a little less flesh, don’t worry, there are some great accessories that will help you cover up without taking away your sex appeal. Cute white thong shorts are great for making sure your outfit isn’t too “sassy,” while white fishnet stockings are a sexy way to cover up your legs. You may also want to get long white gloves, which were a very popular fashion accessory at the time.
Accessory Tip 4: Makeup
It’s always a good idea to research and copy the makeup from that era. Most costume websites specializing in the 1960s have the types of lipstick colors that were used at that time and also offer large black false eyelashes that were very popular throughout the decade.
Accessories Tip 5: Go-Go Boots
In my opinion, the must-have accessory for any 60s costume is a pair of Go-Go boots. These come in a range of bright colors to match your costume, but personally I would choose a white pair that would normally go with any 60’s costume.
